Headlights – Eyelids

One of the challenges with owning a classic like the AW11 is dealing with aging plastics. Over time, components become brittle and start to deteriorate. Among the first to go are the headlight “eyelids”—those subtle trim pieces that sit just above the pop-up headlights. When I purchased my MR2, these were already missing, leaving noticeable gaps that disrupted the car’s sleek lines.

Fortunately, replacements are still available. Toyota offers parts, and there are also replicas on the market. I managed to source a pair and decided to take on the task of painting them to match my car’s color.

Preparation is Key

Before painting, it’s crucial to prepare the surface properly:

  1. Cleaning: Thoroughly wash the eyelids with soap and water to remove any dirt or grease.
  2. Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere better.
  3. Priming: Apply a plastic adhesion promoter or primer designed for plastics. This step ensures that the paint bonds well to the surface.Boosted Media

Final Thoughts

Restoring the headlight eyelids was a rewarding project that enhanced the appearance of my MR2. It’s a relatively simple task that can make a significant difference in the car’s aesthetics. If you’re missing these pieces or yours are showing their age, sourcing replacements and giving them a fresh coat of paint is well worth the effort.
